Bethel, New York, is a small town and farming community in Sullivan County, with a population of 4,255 ( 2010 census). Many small hamlets and lakes surround Bethel which include Kauneonga Lake, Smallwood, White Lake, parts of Mongaup Valley, and Swan Lake. This was all once a very popular vacation area from the 1930's to the 1970's, which was then known as the Borscht Belt, a colloquial term for the many summer resorts in the Catskill Mountains. Bethel is know world-wide as the site of the original Woodstock Music and Arts Festival, held there in 1969, that drew more than 500,000 people for "Three Days of Peace and Music". Today, a few resorts remain in the region, and there are many summer homes belonging to families from the New York City area. The center has over 220,000 visitors annually. The Museum at Bethel Woods opened in 2008, and is home to a collection of artifacts and permanent exhibits of the Woodstock Festival along with various aspects of life in the Sixties including fashion, music and rock heros, along with political protests that occured during that era.
